Higher Education

Lynden is within 15 miles of three post-secondary institutions: Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College, and Bellingham Technical College, all in Bellingham.

Western Washington University is a four year regional state university with more than 12,000 students, making it the third-largest institution of higher education in the state. Nearly 4,000 students, including 92 percent of all first-year students, live on the 215-acre campus. Western is in the midst of a capital facilities program that already has seen a student-funded recreation center open in 2003. A new classroom building for the departments of communications, journalism, computer science and physics opened in 2004. Western celebrated its centennial during the 1999-2000 school year.

Whatcom Community College is a public community college serving an average of 7,182 students each quarter (3,843 full-time equivalent students). WCC, which is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, offers associate degrees in academic transfer, general studies, and technical/professional areas, as well as opportunities to complete high school, or take classes for personal enrichment. The college also has special programs to assist students in acquiring learning skills necessary for academic and occupational success. A strong Community Education Department offers classes about diverse interests and skills, such as photography, fictional writing, and computer software.

Bellingham Technical College offers professional technical education in many areas, including electronics, auto collision repair, and office administration. It has approximately 4,300 students and 1,700 full-time equivalent students. Many of BTC’s associate degrees transfer directly to City University’s many locations in Washington. City University and BTC are partnering to make selected baccalaureate degree programs available on the BTC campus. BTC also collaborates with local businesses, customizing classes to meet their needs.
