New Library Adds Space, Resources

A longstanding need was filled in June 2003 when the Arthur J. Henken Building opened, giving the Lynden Library a facility nearly four times larger than its previous location.

The 15,578-square-foot building now contains twice as many items as the former building, including many more books, books on tape, magazines, DVDs, CDs, CD ROMs, and computer stations with Internet access. The library, part of the Whatcom County Library System, also is home to the Whatcom County System Reference Center.

Other features include: a 60-foot clock tower; an 825-square-foot meeting room that can hold approximately 65 people; an 1,875-square-foot children's area; and a 420-square-foot area for young adults.

The library building is named after Art Henken, who died May 1, 2003 after serving 49 years on the Lynden City Council.

The Lynden Library is located at 216 4th St. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call (360) 354-4883 or visit www.wcls.org.
